What’s the Challenge?

When interacting with team members from other nations, do you sometimes feel misunderstood? Do you have conflict with team members cross functionally? Is your team just not working together well? It doesn’t need to be this way: team competence is a  complex set of awareness, attitudes, and skills that allow you to interact with international business colleagues in ways that are appropriate, respectful, and relevant. So how do we manage difficult situations and achieve a high functioning team environment? Over the last few years, there has substantial research about conflict and collaboration yielding new insights and knowledge that now informs better ways to have a team perform. Our Team Dynamics session helps to overcome team communication and integration issues whether their source is cultural, cross functional, or the result of personal conflicts.

Core Modules Include:

Pre-session: A brief online assessment of team function and program goals along with a short 3 page pre-reading.

Stages of Team Growth: What is the path to a high performance team (HPT)? In this module through a sequence of activities we examine and experience the traditional stages of team growth (forming,storming,norming and performing), with the aim of assessing and discussing where we are now, and what steps we need to take to grow.

Overcoming Common Dysfunctions: As part of any team growth, we must overcome and identify barriers. Lencioni’s research lists 5 common dysfunctions (trust, conflict, commitment, accountability, and inattention). Based on pre-work we dive deep into those affecting the team and take steps to counteract them.

Dealing with Difficult Conversations: No matter how high functioning a team, conflicts will at times occur. This module trains on methods for handling difficult conversations and difficult people in a way that leads towards a better functioning team, rather than sowing further distrust.

Sample Activities:

  • Identifying your dominant conflict management strategy-  exploring the five different conflict management strategies describing the corresponding trade-offs, and their appropriate usage in different situations.
  • The development/improvement of communication and active listening skills- understanding the benefits of different communication techniques such as paraphrasing, and empathizing.
  • Managing our body language during conflict
  • Team building activities
  • Conflict simulations

Optional Modules:

New Team Beginnings: Getting off on the right start is key, and this module, specifically designed for brand new teams working together in a workshop, is idea at breaking the ice and creating common ground.

Intercultural Teams: Are most of your teams intercultural? If so this module can help to deal with some of the key issues arising in our rapidly globalizing team environment, to ensure differences contribute to strength, rather than hostility.

Personal & Team Time Management: Time catches up with us all— how we manage it individually as well as with our team greatly affects the harmony, flow, and productivity of an office. From building better meetings, to dealing positively with different perceptions of time, this module looks to get your team running smoothly and creating the best balance to its schedule.

Virtual Teams: Increasingly many teams today rarely if ever meet face to face, and yet they are still tasked with working together well. This new work environment presents serious challenges to almost anyone. Thankfully research and time-tested strategies do exist for developing a good team, even if you never meet face to face.

Assertive Speaking: How can we avoid being passive in conversations, without becoming aggressive? For people to work together well it is necessary to have positive assertive communication, a skillset that can be learned with the proper application of interactive techniques.
