I clearly state a realistic goal of what I want the audience to do/know/act on at the end of the presentation
For everything in my presentation, I ask “How will this help the audience understand the message better?”, and leave something out if it won’t help the audience
I consider the preferences the audience has for pre-reading, presentation style, and handouts
I create an opening for my presentation that grabs the audience’s attention by clearly showing them the benefit they will get from the presentation
I plan each slide on paper first so that I separate the thinking to design the slide from the mechanics of creating it in the software
I focus each slide on one point only and don’t worry that I have more slides because it is more important that the message is clear
I eliminate excess information from my slides including excess decimal places and extra numbers that are not the final result of a calculation
For numeric information, I give the insight of what the number means instead of just showing the number and hoping the audience figures out what it means
I book time in my schedule for practice and rehearsal so that I am confident on the day of the presentation
I have all text 18 point or larger size (preferably 24 point or larger)
I write a headline for each slide that summarizes the message I want the audience to take from this slide
If I use a text point slide, I try to keep the text short so that it averages no more than six words per point and six points per slide
I use bullet point slides only when the points have a hierarchical relationship, otherwise I use a simple list of text points without a bullet character
If text points are related, I group them on the slide inside shapes to help the audience see that the points are related
I select the appropriate type of graph to show the point I want the audience to understand
I clean up the distracting elements that exist in default graphs
I know how to copy slides from other presentations so that the format is preserved
I know how to create hidden slides to contain more detail for handouts or to jump to during the presentation
I know how to jump to any slide in my presentation
